Lilly Seawright-Page, 14, has grown up in the family-owned business and knows that she will follow in the footsteps of her grandfather, Robert (Bob) Seawright, the current owner of Seawright’s, and her father, Travis Page, who is the manager, and other members of the respected team of professionals at the funeral home. What contributed to your decision to go into the family business? Since I was a little girl, I have enjoyed going to work with my dad and papa. They would allow me to do random jobs around the office to help. I remember the first time I was allowed to go on a funeral. I was 11 years old, and I was given the responsibility of greeting people as they came in and handing out memorials. This day gave me the feeling that I had possibly found the career that I wanted to do for the rest of my life. My great-great-grandfather, H.W. Seawright, started the business in 1925, which means we will celebrate our 100th anniversary in three years. My family has worked very hard to be an accomplished and well-respected business in our community, and I want to continue that legacy. What is your favorite part of the business so far? My favorite part of the business is the opportunity to help families during a time of grief. I believe that the funeral business is not just a service – it is also a type of ministry. What are some myths and false assumptions about the business? I think that a big myth of being a funeral director is that it is a profession only for males. That is by no means true. Although it is male-dominated, that doesn’t mean a female isn’t as efficient or successful. Another myth I believe is out there is that all funeral directors are old, pale men who are always serious and straightforward. Try to imagine your life 10 years from now. What do you hope that life will involve? Ten years from now I want to be a licensed funeral director carrying on the business my family built and making a difference in my community. I want to have an impact on someone's life that no one else can. How would you describe your journey to becoming the doctor you are today? My journey to becoming the audiologist that I am today was full of surprises. While completing my undergraduate degree to become a teacher of the deaf, I became interested in the medical and technological aspects of audiology during a pediatric audiology course. I initially planned to work in pediatrics but quickly learned that I enjoyed working with adults, too, once in graduate school. I was hesitant to learn about the vestibular – balance – system but ended up loving it, so much so that helping people with dizziness is one of the core focuses of my private practice. What or who inspires you? I am inspired by other female audiologists who are also practice owners from all across the country. They are working hard to create businesses that help their local community, support their staff and advance the profession of hearing and balance care. Describe the person and provider you strive to be. I am striving to set a great example for my kids as an entrepreneur with a servant-leader work ethic. As a provider, I strive to provide the best experience possible for my patients so that they will have the most optimal outcomes. I hope to be a leader in my professional community by bringing top-notch audiological care to my patients. What advice do you wish you could give to your younger self? Keep working hard and follow the path, even if it seems like what you want to achieve is unattainable. The future is bright, and you’ll be meeting your goals sooner than you think! Don’t give up and dream even bigger. Dr. Kathryn Miles Jackson UPSTATE HEARING AND BALANCE Greenville 864-770-8822 upstatehearingandbalance.com MEN WI N HEALTH
