I always enjoyed helping others but just assumed owning a business would be the career path I would travel. My first encounter with health care came when my father was diagnosed with cancer. He passed away when I was 10 years old. I knew I had a heart to serve, so I chose the health care path to help others. What advice do you wish you could give to your younger self? Pray more and be more committed to God – he will always direct my path; never doubt my gut feeling and never second guess a decision, even if it was a wrong one, because it makes me a stronger person; take better care of my health, growing older has enough challenges; and work hard and do your very best, but don’t put work above your family. Shaunty Swindler As a child did, you think you’d be where you are today professionally? No, not really. So many people have seen things in me that I can’t even imagine seeing in myself. When I took care of my great grandmother at the age of 21, she told me I would make a wonderful nurse; this is why I love taking care of seniors today and treat them all like they are my family. Describe a moment you felt like giving up. Why didn’t you? The health care field is so demanding and needing staff is a must. I felt like quitting so many times when I worked a double shift and had my regular job the next day. What keeps me going is when my residents notice I am there with them, and I will do what needs to be done for them. One of my residents just told me the other day: “I am so glad you are here today and feel so much better when I know you are here.” This is the reason I cannot and will not quit.
