I wanted to help people heal from their issues. I wanted to do something meaningful, so I started as a reiki healer and teacher. Herbs and tinctures fascinated me, so I began to get certifications. That path led me to return to school and complete my degrees in natural medicine, aromatic studies and eventually my Ph.D. in biology and natural health. Describe the moment or time of life you decided to have a career in medicine. My day is never the same! I can see a patient for a chronic illness such as cancer, or I can see a patient for stress and anxiety for reiki. Or I could be in the lab all day making teas, salves or solutions for my patients. What routines and habits help you prepare for, or recover from, a day’s challenges? I would suggest taking a cool shower versus a hot one. Cooler water will lower your blood pressure and reduce stress. Finally, complete the routine with stretching and gentle movement to release any additional tension. Describe a moment you felt like giving up. Why didn’t you? We have been faced with so many challenges that I’m sure every start-up faces. The biggest moment was our last relocation. I really wanted to quit. It was hard, and I wasn’t sure if our patients would follow us to the other side of town. Not only did they follow us, we ended up being closer to their homes versus closer to their jobs. It was a great move. What motivated me was reading a book called “Three Feet From Gold.” The book helped me to tap into my resilient nature. How do you respond to the challenges of being a woman in the health care field? Being a woman in the health care field can be challenging and hard, but I remember my “why.” Sure, I get frustrated at the disparities and unfair treatment; however those situations are not why I’m here. I’m here to help people heal – that is my first priority. When situations arise that are unfair, I simply turn my attention back to my purpose. What you give your attention to will magnify. Because of that, I’d rather magnify my purpose than my problem. What or who inspires you? My children inspire me. They are so smart, adaptive and resilient. Whenever they are met with a challenge, they face it head on and tackle it. I learn from them daily. Describe the person and provider you strive to be. I’m striving to be the person who is fully committed to helping others through my knowledge, talents and skills. I want to be a provider that changes lives for the better and help as many people as possible live the life they deserve.
